Argon is a gas that’s particularly abundant which means it’s economical to use and easy to acquire. As it’s heavier than air it can prevent the corroding actions of oxygen as well as keeping drafts out more effectively.
Although it works in a similar way to Krypton it’s a far cheaper gas which makes the balance of investment and savings far more favourable to the customer. For this reason, Argon can be used for any cavity widths 6mm to 20mm.
Thermal performance could improve by almost a third compared to air-filled double-glazing but much depends on the thickness of cavities used to manufacture the sealed unit..
Krypton is another noble gas that performs in a very similar way to Argon. Slightly higher in quality and more dense, it’s an extremely effective form of insulation for double and triple glazed units.
Krypton is typically used for thinner windows, where the gap between the panes is much smaller, such as heritage windows. This preserves the authentic aesthetic without compromising on thermal performance.
The only real drawback of Krypton is that it’s a much rarer gas, existing in quantities in the atmosphere of one part per million. This makes it a more expensive option and why it’s primarily used in smaller quantities.
